Physical therapy is an excellent treatment modality for long-term chronic pain. It’s effective for sports injuries, orthopedic conditions, such as osteoporosis and low back pain, and joint and soft tissue injuries. A physical therapist will evaluate components of your movement and function and create an individual treatment plan to increase range of motion, body mechanics and strength while reducing pain.
Physical therapy treatment plans vary depending on your condition. It may include strengthening exercises, low-impact aerobic training, pain relief exercise and stretching exercise. You may work on core muscles, as well as other parts of the body. Many physical therapists implement the McKenzie and Dynamic Lumbar Stabilization exercises. The McKenzie exercises are spinal extension exercises that reduce pain from compromised disc space like a herniated disc. All of its upper and lower back exercises use core muscle contraction. These exercises are also effective for radiculopathy and degenerative disc disease. Dynamic Lumbar Stabilization exercises teach the spine how to stay in proper position. It focuses on an awareness of where the joint are positioned. The benefits of Dynamic Lumbar Stabilization include reduction in back pain and good spinal positioning. Plus, it can be combination with McKenzie exercises. Physical therapists also provide trigger point exercise for cervical pain.
Physical therapy may also include passive treatment, such as heat/ice packs, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulator (TENS) units and ultrasound. Ice helps reduce inflammation, while heat helps relax muscles. TENS units use electrical stimulation to mask low back pain by hiding painful signals sent to the brain. These units can also be used at home. With ultrasound, sound waves deliver deep heat and penetrate into the soft tissues to reduce pain and enhance tissue healing.
At Chiro-Med Health & Wellness Centers in Orland Park, IL, we take a holistic approach to healing and treatment. In addition to manual spinal adjustments, our complementary services include spinal decompression, acupuncture, massage therapy and physical therapy. All of these modalities work synergistically to enhance the other. Massage therapy and spinal decompression treatments are highly relaxing. With spinal decompression, you’re placed on a motorized table that gently stretches the spine. It’s ideal for those who have disc compression. Massage therapy relaxes the muscles, increases circulation and accelerates the body’s natural healing process. Acupuncture treatments entail the placement of hair-thin needles along the body’s meridian. It’s an ancient medical treatment that still works today. And with physical therapy, you can improve function and get back to enjoying your favorite activities.

“I feel ten years younger than when I came in. At 68 years old my knees and hips are virtually pain free because of the great combined effort, I avoided hip and knee surgery. Outstanding staff!”
